You’ve probably seen lots of articles and news about using bentonite clay to heal oily and acne-prone skin, but what about sensitive skin? Can you use bentonite clay on sensitive skin at all? Can it help acne if your skin is very sensitive? (Yes, sensitive skin can still get acne!)
The answers is yes, of course! Bentonite clay is called “healing clay” for a reason. It can be really calming for all skin types.
You can use bentonite clay on all kinds of skin, but the secret is to change the way you use it to suit your unique skin.
Bentonite clay can cleanse, brighten, and soften skin, but you don’t want to overdo it.
Tips for Using Bentonite Clay Mask for Sensitive Skin
Always do a patch test first
We recommend this for all skin types, but a patch test is especially important if you have sensitive skin.
Before applying the mask to your face, smudge a small amount on the inside of your wrist and let it dry to make sure there are no negative reactions. If there are, don’t use the mask on your face!
Use the mask less often
While those with oily and acne prone skin can use a bentonite clay mask several times per week, you might want to limit use to once or twice per week if you have sensitive skin.
Bentonite clay is powerful and great for drawing impurities out of the skin, but it can also have a drying effect if you use it too often.
And “too often” can mean different things for different people. Pay attention to how your skin reacts to the mask and decrease your use if it dries you out too much.
Use for a shorter duration
If you mix the mask yourself, the standard recommendation is to apply and wash off after 15 minutes. If you have sensitive skin, however, try washing it off after 5 or 10 minutes. If your skin feels too dry or if you notice any irritation, use for an even shorter time next time.
Use a thinner layer
Some people really slather the clay on, which is fine, but you can get away with a very thin layer.
Don’t completely coat your face. Instead, make sure you can still see a little skin beneath the layer of clay.
Always follow up with a gentle moisturizer
This applies to all skin types, but moisturizing is especially important for those with dry or sensitive skin to avoid over drying.
After you wash off the mask, apply a gentle, all-natural moisturizer to keep your skin soft and hydrated.
Use a gentle premixed mask
Bentonite clay is powerful stuff straight out of the tub, but our premixed clay mask is a little more gentle than the clay you mix yourself. In fact, you may be able to use it every day!
The best part is, you don’t have to deal with messy tools or clogged drains. You can apply the clay straight out of the tube and wash it off after just 5 minutes.
All the great benefits with none of the mess and a fraction of the time. It’s a win-win!
