Bentonite clay is one of the most powerful skin care treatments on the planet. Pretty impressive, considering the stuff comes straight out of the ground!
Bentonite clay is gentle and works well on most skin types, but that doesn’t mean every skin type can use clay the same way with the same frequency and get the same result!
Your skin is unique to you, and your skin care routine should be tailored to your specific needs, schedule, and skin type.
When it comes to skin care, less is often more.
When we struggle with acne, oily skin, dryness, or some other cosmetic skin issue, it’s tempting to jump into a new product or routine with both feet.
We might use tons of products every day, apply harsh cleansers and creams, and over exfoliate, but this often makes the issue worse.
Are all bentonite clay masks the same?
Nope! Different brands come from different locations and may have slightly different mineral compositions.
Our suggestions in this post are for our own Bentonite Secret Clay Mask, which is premixed and ready to use right out of the tube! You can buy bentonite clay in a powdered form and mix your own mask as well. For this, we only recommend the brand Aztec Secret (which is what our own clay is made from!)
As an added benefit, our premixed mask is more gentle than the stuff you get in the tub. It’s also much less messy, more convenient, and faster to use because it dries in 5 minutes instead of 15.
So how often should you use a bentonite mask for your skin type?
No matter what skin type you have and what suggestions we have, it’s still a good idea to tailor your routine to your own skin.
Those with dry or sensitive skin should only use the mask once per week.
Make sure to apply a gentle, water-based moisturizer after use. (And if you aren’t moisturizing once or twice daily, do that too!)
Those with oily and acne-prone skin usually benefit from more frequent use.
Try using the mask at least 3 times per week or more if your skin responds well. If your skin doesn’t seem to like more frequent use, then, of course, use the mask less often.
It’s also a good idea to follow up with a gentle, water-based moisturizer. Remember, we want to balance and regulate oily skin, not dry it out.
What if your skin is somewhere in between?
Customize your mask use! If you have an oily T zone, you could do a mask just on that area once or twice a week and maybe a full face mask once per week.
Bentonite clay masks are great for spot treatment, and you don’t have to put it all over your face if you don’t really need to!
The bottom line is this: Start with the recommendation for your skin type and go from there.
However, our premixed clay mask is gentle enough for most skin types to use every day. I use it every day and get great results without the mess!
Sometimes more gentle products with more frequent use work better than stronger products used a few times per week. Try it and see how your skin responds!
Good luck on your journey to healthy, beautiful skin!
